Why is my phone charging slowly? 10 common causes and fixes

Has your phone suddenly started charging more slowly than usual? It does not necessarily mean that the battery is faulty. The problem is often related to the charger, cable, temperature, charging port or how you use your phone while it is charging.

Short answer: A phone usually charges slowly because the power source provides too little power, the cable or power adapter does not support fast charging, the phone is too hot or cold, the charging port is dirty or the device is being used intensively while charging. With wireless charging, incorrect placement, a thick phone case or magnetic accessories can also interfere with charging.

Quick overview: why your phone is charging slowly

  1. Weak power source: Connect the charger directly to a wall socket.

  2. Worn or damaged cable: Try an intact and compatible cable.

  3. Incorrect charger for fast charging: Check the power and charging standard required by your phone.

  4. Dirt in the charging port: Inspect the port in good light without inserting anything.

  5. Moisture in the port: Disconnect the cable and allow the phone to air-dry.

  6. The phone is too hot or cold: Move it to a dry place at normal room temperature.

  7. Heavy use while charging: Lock the screen and close demanding apps.

  8. Incorrect placement on the wireless charger: Centre the phone on the charging surface.

  9. The case or accessories are interfering: Temporarily remove the case, cards and magnetic accessories.

  10. Battery protection or an ageing battery: Check the battery settings and battery health.

1. The power source provides too little power

A USB port in a computer, car or older power strip can provide less power than a wall socket. The phone will still charge, but it will take longer. Start by connecting the charger directly to a working wall socket.

If charging becomes faster, you have probably found the cause. If the problem continues, check the charging cable and power adapter next.

2. The cable or power adapter is worn

A cable can be damaged even if it still works occasionally. A loose connection, bent connectors, discolouration or damaged insulation are signs that the cable should be replaced. Do not use accessories that are damaged or become unusually hot.

Test the cable and power adapter separately using compatible accessories that you know work correctly. This makes it easier to determine which component is causing the problem.

3. The charger does not support your phone’s fast charging

Not all chargers provide the same amount of power. A high wattage shown on the packaging does not automatically mean that your phone can use it. The phone, cable and power adapter must all support a compatible charging standard.

On certain iPhone models, you may see information about a slow charger under Settings > Battery. On a Samsung Galaxy, you can also check that the relevant fast charging setting is enabled. Menu names can vary between models and software versions.

If you need a new cable, explore Holdit’s range of charging cables. Always check compatibility with your phone model before making a purchase.

4. There is dirt in the charging port

Dust and lint can prevent the connector from going all the way into the port. Carefully shine a light into the port and check whether you can see anything. Do not insert metal, needles or other objects, as they could damage the contacts.

If you suspect that the port is dirty but cannot remove the dirt without inserting something, professional cleaning is the safest option.

5. The phone has detected moisture

Many phones restrict charging when they detect liquid or moisture in the port. Disconnect the cable if this happens. If recommended by the manufacturer, switch off the phone and leave it in a dry place at room temperature until the port is completely dry.

Do not insert paper, cotton buds or other objects into the port. Do not use heat to try to speed up the drying process. Always follow the instructions for your particular phone model.

6. The phone is too hot or too cold

The phone’s protection system may reduce the charging speed or pause charging when the temperature is outside a safe range. This can happen in direct sunlight, inside a hot car, after intensive use or in very cold conditions.

Move the phone to a dry place at normal room temperature and wait for it to return to a normal temperature before continuing to charge it. If the phone frequently becomes warm while charging, temporarily remove the case and make sure that the charger is not covered.

7. You are using the phone intensively while it charges

Games, video calls, navigation, streaming and large downloads require a lot of energy. If the phone is using almost as much power as it receives, the battery level may appear to remain unchanged or increase very slowly.

Lock the screen, close any apps you do not need and leave the phone to charge undisturbed for a while. This simple test can quickly show whether heavy use is causing the problem.

8. The phone is incorrectly positioned on the wireless charger

During wireless charging, the phone’s charging coil needs to be correctly aligned with the coil in the charger. If the phone is positioned at an angle, charging may become slower, stop or restart several times.

Place the phone in the centre of the charging surface. If you have an iPhone and want stable magnetic alignment, a MagSafe-compatible phone case can be a practical option for compatible models.

9. The case, cards or magnetic accessories are interfering

A very thick case or an accessory between the phone and wireless charger can reduce the energy transfer. Payment cards, metal objects and magnetic accessories should not be placed between the phone and charger.

Temporarily remove the case and all accessories and try again. If charging then works normally, check the compatibility between the phone, case and charger.

10. Battery optimisation or battery age affects charging

Modern phones may intentionally slow down or pause charging to reduce battery wear. Charging may therefore stop at around 80 per cent and continue later. Depending on the manufacturer, this feature may be called optimised, adaptive or protected charging.

Rechargeable batteries also age chemically. As a battery gets older, both its capacity and performance can decline. Check your phone’s battery health or battery diagnostics if the feature is available.

How to troubleshoot slow charging step by step

  1. Connect the charger directly to a wall socket.

  2. Try a compatible cable and power adapter that you know work correctly.

  3. Restart the phone.

  4. Check whether the phone displays a warning about a slow charger, moisture or temperature.

  5. Inspect the charging port in good light without inserting anything.

  6. Leave the phone to charge with the screen locked for 20–30 minutes.

  7. For wireless charging, centre the phone and remove the case, cards and accessories.

  8. Check the battery health and the settings for fast charging or battery protection.

Change only one thing at a time. This makes it easier to identify what actually solves the problem.

When should you have the phone repaired?

Contact the manufacturer or an authorised repair provider if the phone will not charge with several working and compatible chargers, the charging port is damaged, the device becomes unusually hot or it switches off while charging.

The same applies if the battery is swollen or the phone has changed shape. Stop using and charging the device until it has been inspected by a professional.

Frequently asked questions about slow charging

Why is my iPhone charging slowly?

Common causes include a low-power charger, a cable that is not working correctly, high or low temperatures, dirt or moisture in the port and optimised battery charging. On certain models, information about a slow charger may appear under Settings and Battery.

Why is my Samsung charging slowly?

Check the cable and power adapter, make sure that fast charging is enabled and confirm that the phone is not too warm. During wireless charging, the phone must be correctly positioned and the case or accessories must not interfere with the connection.

Is it dangerous to use a more powerful charger?

A compatible, good-quality charger will normally only provide the power that the phone can accept. What matters is that the charger, cable and charging standard are compatible with the device. Do not use damaged or unreliable accessories.

Why does charging stop at 80 per cent?

This may be caused by a battery protection feature or the phone being too warm. The feature reduces the amount of time the battery spends at a very high charge level. Check the battery settings and any temperature warnings before assuming that there is a fault.

Does a phone charge more slowly with a case?

A standard compatible case rarely affects wired charging. During wireless charging, however, a thick or incompatible case, cards or metal objects can reduce the energy transfer.

Is wireless charging always slower?

It depends on the phone, charger and the power levels they support. Wireless charging loses more energy as heat and may therefore be slower than compatible wired charging in some situations.
